Montepulciano winemakers in Italy generally adhere to one of two winemaking ideologies: those who use new oak for aging and those who do not.
Old oak montepulciano
To date, Montepulciano wines made from oak have attracted many of the most enthusiastic supporters abroad as their appeal. These wines can reveal deep black fruit flavors such as boysenberry, blackberry and prunes, licorice, and flavors of cocoa, vanilla and mocha. The wines are clear in color and sometimes have tannins, so look for a wine that is about 4 years old or longer. Spend $30–$80 and you have a great bottle of aged Montepulciano in oak.
Neutral Montepulciano
Because Montepulciano has more anthocyanins (colors) in the wine, some producers have created a lighter or even pinker (rosé) wine by having less contact with the skin of the hands during fermentation. Montepulciano wines offer a burst of fruity flavors of sour cherries, red plums, blueberries and raspberries, and are embellished with aromas of violets and dried herbs. Spend about $9–$15 this amazing flavor will be yours.
