Did you know that direct exposure to sunlight can change a great bottle of wine into a hard drink? This unfortunate phenomenon is known as Light Strike.
Light Strike occurs when direct ultraviolet (UV) light excites the alcohol’s natural riboflavin and pantothenic acid. After stimulation these molecules will react with natural amino acids. This produces sulfur compounds that you can smell at low levels and naturally give off a sour smell.
Just 3 hours of “sun exposure” is enough for a wine bottle to lose its inherent flavor for a transparent bottle, wine in a bottle with a green shell will have a period of 18 hours. So most modern wine bottles are dark in color to avoid direct sunlight.
There is a lot of research showing that amber bottles are not the usual choice of winemakers, who often choose bottles that offer near-safe protection from UV rays. This is really something no one wants, as every customer loves to see clearly the color of the wine inside the bottle.
If you want to completely block the harmful effects of UV rays, installing LED bulbs in your wine storage areas is a great solution for enthusiasts.
