Wine decanter is certainly no stranger to wine lovers. However, each wine line has a different decanter method that not everyone understands. Let’s learn with True Wine the decanter method for each different wine line and the notes when decanter for each different wine line to enjoy the best wine.
Decant red wine
Nearly all red wines require a decanting process. The wine will undergo oxidation and evaporation for a more fruity and smoother taste. The bottle type and decanting time are calculated for each red wine line as follows:
- Light, soft red wines like Pinot Noir, Gamay, Zweigelt and Schiava: choose a small or medium sized bottle and have been chilled to decant for 20-30 minutes.
- Balanced, harmonious red wines such as Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Merlot, Malbec, Barbera, Dolcetto and Tempranillo: choose a medium sized bottle and decant for 30-60 minutes.
- Rich, powerful red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Petit Sirah, Monastrell and Tannat: use a wide-bottom decanter over 60 minutes.
Decant white wine and rosé wine
Most white and rosé wines don’t need to be decanted. In fact, some notes like the passion fruit in Sauvignon Blanc will disappear. However, according to Ashley Hepworth – a famous winemaker in the US: white wines also benefit from decanting, especially aged white wines from Burgundy. A small bottle that has been chilled for about 30 minutes can be used to bring out interesting aromas for white wines.
Sparkling Wine Decant
Most sparkling wines will not need a decan and can be poured into a glass to enjoy directly. However, according to Ryan Stotz, a French and Spanish wine expert, for handcrafted Champagne lines, decanting will remove scents from anoxic production such as flint and sulfur. and eggshells. After decanting, the wine will have a more elegant and fresh aroma. But it should be noted that Champagne should only be decanted for 15-20 minutes (maximum 30 minutes). Prosecco sparkling wine is best not decanted.
Some notes when decanting wine
- Decanters need to be cleaned carefully before use. Use vinegar, coarse salt and ice, or specialized cleaning granules to clean, making sure the decanter is free from water stains, dust or soapy odors.
- Within 24 hours before decanting, the bottle should be placed upright so that the residue settles to the bottom of the bottle. To make sure there is no residue, you can put about 30ml in the bottom of the wine bottle or use a filter when pouring into the decanter.
- If you’re decanting a bottle of aged wine, consult an expert as you may miss out on the subtleties of a precious bottle. The fragrance will be outstanding for the first hour and then quickly fade away.
